This workshop offers an in-depth exploration of the foundations of abstraction while welcoming newcomers who are curious to explore the process. Participants will experiment with a variety of acrylic painting techniques to develop their own unique approach to abstraction. The foundations of color theory, composition, design, surface treatments, and materials will be highlighted throughout the course, along with presentations featuring distinguished abstract artists, past and present.

Through exercises inspired by memory(identity), visual references (including photographs and en plein air), and expressionism, participants will gradually move from “what is seen” to “what is felt,” shifting away from realism toward a more contemporary methodology. Using line, shape, color, value, and texture, landscapes and compositions will be reinterpreted through abstract expression, allowing each participant to develop a unique visual approach.

The course focuses on experimentation, play, curiosity, and self-discovery. It encourages participants to explore the narrative within their work while developing a personal artistic voice. Feedback will be provided throughout, and the small class size ensures individual attention to support artistic growth.

This workshop nurtures both creativity and spirit. Traditional and abstract artists of all levels are welcome.

Class Supply List

1) Acrylic Paints: (professional level):

• Titanium White
• Cadmium Yellow
• Ultramarine Blue
• Cadmium Red
• Ivory Black

2) Painting clothing or apron, disposable gloves

3) Assorted Acrylic Brushes, including:

• Large Flat Bright (at least 3/4”)
• Medium Flat Bright (at least 1/2”)
• Small Flat Bright (at least 1/4”)
• Small round brush

3) Package of 5 or more, 11” x 14” canvases (stretched or panel)

4) light pencil or chalk pastel for drawing on canvas and eraser
